Position schedule will be based on the school's standard schedule. While some districts may offer opportunities outside of the regular school schedule, these are not guaranteed and opportunities will be limited.

A substitute teacher is responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and promoting student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. Substitute teachers will work effectively with the school administration and other teachers to minimize any potential transition problems from the teacher to substitute and substitute to theteacher.

Substitute teachers must implement teacher lesson plans, assign student class work, and homework, maintain classroom control and discipline. Substitute teachers must also complete a daily report or evaluation to communicate any pertinent information resulting from the day`s events.

Job Goals

Reports to theschool office at the beginning of school day to pick up required materials/schedule of classes.

Reports to theschool office at the end of school day to return any materials as needed.

Follows sign out procedures as determined by the principal.

Carries out a program of study set in lesson plans left by the classroom teacher.

Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and involvement of the students.

Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for each predetermined lesson.

Employs instructional methods and materials that are deemed the most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives.

Maintains a neat and orderly classroom. Straightens chairs, tables, clears chalkboard, etc.

Takes attendance in accordance with school procedures.

Indicates to students at thebeginning of class the basic expectations for behavior in the class in accordance with school and district policies.

Ensures that the students are never left unattended in the classroom.

May perform duties usually required of the absent teacher such as lunchroom duty, hall monitoring, and carpool duty.

Knows emergency evacuation routes for the assigned classrooms and executes them according to school policy in the event of an emergency drill or an actual emergency.

Knows and executes procedures for referring students who are disciplinary problems.

Maintains reasonable rules of conduct that encourage self-discipline and responsibility.

Maintains a professional and positive rapport with parents/co-workers/administration/School Board.

Knows and executes school safety procedures

Maintain strict confidentiality concerning student records

Performs other related duties as directed by theprincipal.

While performing the duties of the job, the substitute teacher is frequently required to stand, talk, walk and sit for long periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the substitute may occasionally push and/or lift up to 40 pounds such as boxes of books or AV/VCR or multimedia carts. The substitute is directly responsible for safety, well-being, and work output of students. A substitute needs to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the parents, students and other staff.

Requirements and Qualifications

High School Diploma

Must be at least 21 years of age

Must hold a valid Alabama Teacher`s Certificate or a valid Alabama Substitute License.

Employment is contingent on completion of the Appleton U module

Clear Federal Fingerprint and Background Check through COGENT

Able to verify employment eligibility through completion of Federal I9 Form

Ability to work on an on-call basis

Friendly and approachable attitude

Prior related experience working with children

Punctual and professional

Maintains a professional appearance.

Able to lift heavy objects up to 40 lbs.
